Instructions
- Toast the bread (or don’t)
Grab your bread and toast it lightly if you want a little crunch. If you like it totally soft, skip it — this is a judgment-free sandwich zone. Just don’t burn it and call it “artisan” (I’ve tried that lie; it doesn’t land).
- If toasting: aim for
light golden.
- Slice the tomato and prep the lettuce
On a cutting board, use a knife to slice the tomato into even slices (about 1/4 inch). Pat the slices dry if they’re super juicy — otherwise your sandwich turns into a sad, soggy situation.
Wash and dry the lettuce. Keep it crisp and cold. Wet lettuce is basically a tiny water balloon waiting to pop inside your bread.
- Spread the mayonnaise
Lay out two slices of bread. Spread mayonnaise on one side of each slice. Go edge-to-edge like you mean it — mayo isn’t just flavor, it’s your anti-soggy insurance policy.
- Layer bacon, lettuce, tomato (the BLT part)
On one slice, stack the lettuce first (it helps keep things crunchy). Add the tomato next. Then layer the chilled cooked bacon on top.
If your bacon is floppy and you wanted snappy, well… that’s a life lesson. Next time cook it a bit longer. Today we eat.
- Close, press, and cut
Top with the second slice of bread (mayo side down). Press the sandwich gently so it doesn’t explode out the sides like a cartoon.
Use a bread knife (or your regular knife) to cut it in half. Diagonal cuts make it taste 12% better. That’s science. Probably.
Serve right away while the lettuce is crisp and your kitchen confidence is high.
lightbulb_2 Tips
Pro tip: If your tomato is super watery, salt it lightly and let it sit for 5 minutes, then pat it dry. Less swamp, more sandwich.
Common mistake: Don’t stack tomato right on the bottom bread unless you enjoy soggy toast sadness. Put lettuce against the bread first — it’s basically edible insulation.
Pro tip: Want extra crunch without changing the “classic” vibe? Toast the bread and let it cool for 2 minutes before building. Hot bread + mayonnaise can go greasy fast (ask me how I know).
Funny but real: If you only have
one slice of bacon(we’ve all been there), cut it into smaller pieces and spread it out. It’s not “less bacon,” it’s bacon distribution strategy.Swap note: Out of mayonnaise? Aioli works great. In a pinch, Greek yogurt also works, but it turns the BLT into that “I’m trying” sandwich. Respect.
| Bread choice | What it’s like |
|---|---|
| White bread | Classic, soft, no drama |
| Sourdough bread | Tangy, sturdier, less sog |
| Whole wheat bread | Hearty, a bit more chew |
